 New World = New Leadership

The technological advancements of the second part of the twentieth century saw the evolution of a new employee. Armed with unlimited methods of communication, the ability to travel anywhere in the world and the growing trend of online social networks that reach out across the globe - international business possibilities are endless. These individuals are of independent spirit. They see the possibilities of inventing the elusive “Me”.

And one of these new super-achievers is YOU!

We are not “workers”. We are individuals. And the game clock shows one minute to go. The time has come, the time is overdue to…re-imagine and then unleash the individual. Tom Peters

Along with the excitement of this new found business style and knowledge comes, of course, personal responsibility.

You can no longer seek shelter in the fantasy of the leader who has all the answers, who promises success in exchange for “followership”. In this age of creativity and initiative, you must imagine and embrace a model of leadership that is loose, open and perpetually innovative.

This is not just optional, now it is unavoidable. The cubicle life is over. The technological changes are not due to stop. On the contrary they will continue up to the moment when technology will be able to replace more and more jobs. We live in the age where:

·        Lifetime employment is over

·        Stable employment at large corporations has gone

·        The average career will likely encompass two or three “occupations” and a half-dozen or more employers

·        Most of us will spend sustained periods of our career in some form of self-employment

Bottom line: you are on your own!

The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet. William Gibson, author of Neuromancer: coined term “cyberspace” in 1984

You may see this as terrifying. You may see this as exhilarating. It is a question of attitude. Opportunity is always present in the midst of crisis. Our attitude will allow us to identify the difference between what should happen and what could happen. A negative attitude will concentrate our attention on what should happen: companies should be responsible; governments should be responsible; someone else should be responsible... This way of thinking brings us very far away from the world of possibilities.

A leader is a dealer in hope. Napoleon Bonaparte

We experience exhilaration when we adopt a different outlook. When we concentrate on what is happening; we open our imagination to what could happen. We can see ourselves as part of a generation of liberation, forging a new path, as they did from the middle ages to renaissance, from the agricultural to the industrial era, etc. We are now passing from the white collar worker era to the free agent era. It won’t be an easy transition, as none of the previous ones have been.

But we will make it work….and here’s how!

We are not “workers”. We are individuals. And the game clock shows one minute to go. The time has come, the time is overdue to…re-imagine and then unleash the individual. Tom Peters

Stop blaming your boss!

You are now the CEO of Me Inc. Take charge. Your career and your life is YOUR business. Sit in the driver seat, take control of the steering wheel and enjoy your own ride.

Start at the core!

If you have purpose with your mission, success will find you. You don’t need to fake it; you don’t need to look for it. What are your unique selling points? Why would you hire yourself? When you are in tune with your values, the universe will rush in to support you.

Seek excellence!

Don’t succumb to perfectionism. Look for mastery. Make mistakes and learn from them. Learn one new thing a day. Start by learning to comfortably say “I don’t know”.

Learn to unlearn. It is not enough to add more colors to our palette. It is also important to leave behind patterns that are no longer useful in this context.

Pay any price to stay in the presence of extraordinary people. M. Murdock

Nurture your networks!

People buy from people. With a rapidly increasing number of options, personal trust generates the momentum of your business faster than the Internet. Nurture your relationships; surround yourself with people you like. Refuse to work with unethical, unkind, negative people. Life is too short! Surround yourself with positive and upbeat people!

Sell, sell, sell!

Do what you excel at. Don’t settle for mediocrity. Play to your strengths. Above all play, innovate, have fun!

See fortune in misfortune

In an unfortunate situation, successful people see the big picture and they take look for the positive steps they can take in their current situation to get ahead. They also allow mistakes and they learn from them.

You will make mistakes. Make BIG mistakes. It’s better to live a life we are striving for than a life we are surviving for. Failing means that you have tried, it means you have experienced, it means you have lived. Take responsibility for being the person you want to be.

A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone. Henry David Thoreau, naturalist

Help others to grow and flourish and you will also. Think of all the work you haven’t got time to address properly and think of the people who are talented in this field. Loosen control and shed some of your sense of responsibility. The work will be completed in less time, with less stress and more benefits for everyone.

Work is evolving from supporting only our survival to nourishing and encouraging our livelihood. Martin Rutte

Work on WOW! projects

Dump the “thank God it’s Friday” job. Hire yourself to projects that aim to change the world. These are the projects that matter, that make a difference and that you love to talk about. These are projects that highlight the value you add and why you are here on Earth.

 How are you feeling now?

Scared?

Energized?

Overwhelmed?

Inspired?

All of these?!

You’re not the only one!
